Meridian Local Scoop

Happy Tuesday, Meridian!

Welcome to issue one hundred ten. Today is mostly cloudy and around 59 with a gusty east wind, and it is Election Day, so bring your photo ID and a little patience for the line.

Today: a wedding expo just up the road, a kids' bike drive, Boise State's climb in the polls, six Meridian events (trivia night, an estate sale, a 49ers watch party), the forecast, and a trivia question about West Ada. Know someone who should be reading this? Forward them the sign-up link →

Let's get into it.

Trivia

🧠 West Ada School District covers almost all of Meridian and is the largest school district in Idaho. Roughly how many students: 15,000, 40,000, or 90,000?

(Answer at the bottom.)

The ice cream shop that makes money when it's cold

28 Wishes sells ice cream in Los Angeles. Below 70°F, sales fall about 20%. The weather is out of their hands. Rent isn't.

So the owners started putting about $20 a day into Kalshi weather markets, taking the cold side. The days that keep customers away now pay something back.

This is hedging. Big companies have done it for decades, buying protection against bad weather, fuel spikes and rising rates. It used to take a broker, a trading desk, and an order size no corner shop could meet.

Kalshi opens it up. Contracts on weather, fuel prices, inflation, tariffs and regulation, starting at a few dollars. Take a position on the outcome that would hurt you. If it hits, the payout softens it. If it doesn't, the contract expires and the good month was the point.

Election Day gets top billing today, then the week settles into trivia at 127 Saloon, a three-day estate sale in the Cadence neighborhood, a Pokémon open play and a 49ers watch party. Friday's estate sale is the one with a built-in countdown: it gets cheaper every day.

✅ Alerts: we could not pull a live NWS alert feed, so check weather.gov/boi for watches or warnings, especially with the wind in the forecast. The NWS Meridian point forecast we normally use was last refreshed Oct. 19, so we did not use it. Today's numbers come from Idaho News 6/KBOI's Boise-area forecast and its Boise readout, so a later update could shift them.

Tuesday, November 3 — Meridian

~59°

Mostly cloudy, with gusty east-to-southeast winds of 20 to 35 mph across the Snake River Basin, per KBOI's Monday forecast. Tonight is mostly dry here, with a few showers possible near the Nevada border. No overnight low was published (it was 38° in Boise Monday night). We have no fresh NWS Meridian number, so we cannot say whether Meridian runs warmer or cooler than Boise today. Plan for a few degrees either way. Sunrise is about 7:24 a.m. and sunset about 5:32 p.m. (both calculated, not from NWS).

The week ahead: Wednesday looks sunny with a high near 58, and Thursday and Friday carry only slight shower chances in northern areas. Lower valleys mostly stay dry, warming into the 60s by Sunday. NWS Boise →

Yard note: the City of Meridian's free curbside leaf collection started Monday and runs through Dec. 4. Leaves only, up to 10 paper bags a week (no tape or staples), at the curb by 6 a.m. on your regular trash day, and with this wind, bag early. Recycle the Fall details →

Meridian-proper news is thin again on Election Day (everything fresh was already in a recent issue), so we are saying so: today's stories are regional, and we flag where each one actually happened.

The Idaho Dream Wedding Expo brings 100-plus vendors to Expo Idaho

Wedding expo hall with vendor booths, flowers and a dress display

More than 100 wedding vendors are expected at the Idaho Dream Wedding Expo on Saturday, Nov. 7 (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) and Sunday, Nov. 8 (10 a.m. to 3 p.m.) at Expo Idaho, 5610 N. General admission is $8, a Wedding Party Pass is $30 and admits up to five people, and kids 12 and under get in free. Tickets are online through the expo's website or at the door, and the article lists a promo code that takes $2 off. This one is in Garden City, not Meridian, but it is the closest big event of its kind this weekend. The image above is an illustration. The promo code and ticket link are in the article →

Boise Bicycle Project needs kids' bikes before Saturday's drop-off

Kids bicycles in a repair workshop with a child's crayon drawing of a bike

The Boise Bicycle Project has received more than 550 requests from community referral partners for its Holiday Kids Bike Giveaway, and it is collecting donated kids' bikes to fill them, Idaho News 6/KBOI reports. It especially needs 16-, 20- and 24-inch bikes plus BMX sizes. Donations are accepted Saturday, Nov. 7, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the alley behind the storefront at 1027 S. Lusk St. in Boise.

Kids draw a "dream bike," and staff and volunteers build bikes from those drawings in November and December ahead of the Dec. 19 giveaway. The group donated more than 1,700 bikes to Idaho families in 2025. This is a Boise drop-off, not a Meridian one, so consider it a nudge to check the garage for the bike somebody outgrew. Boise State climbs to No. 21 after a 46-45 thriller

Football stadium with blue turf under evening lights

Boise State beat Texas State 46-45 for its seventh straight win and moved up one spot to No. 21 in the Coaches Poll, Idaho News 6/KBOI reports. The Broncos hold at No. 20 in the AP poll, are 7-1 overall and 4-0 in Pac-12 play, and are the only undefeated team in the conference. Backup quarterback Max Cutforth, filling in for the injured Maddux Madsen, threw three touchdown passes in the fourth quarter, and freshman receiver Rasean Jones scored three touchdowns.

Next up is Saturday, Nov. 7, at Colorado State in Fort Collins, with a 4 p.m. kickoff Mountain time on USA Sports. Not a Meridian story, strictly speaking, but a lot of Meridian living rooms will be tuned in. The image above is an illustration. Read more →

🧠 Trivia answer: 40,000.

Idaho News 6 described West Ada as the state's largest school district, with more than 40,000 students, in its July coverage of the district's leadership, and Wikipedia notes the district includes almost all of Meridian. For scale, that is more students than the entire population of plenty of Idaho towns. The district's own news page also says it ranks first among Idaho's largest districts in testing. Read more →
