Meridian Local Scoop

Happy Sunday, Meridian!

Welcome to issue one hundred one. This morning starts with widespread frost and then turns sunny and around 66, which is the weather equivalent of a house guest who is rude at breakfast and delightful by lunch.

Today: Idaho's first flu death of the season (and what it means for the rest of us), a short but spooky list of Halloween-week events from a card-game tournament to a Chicken Delite parking-lot worship night, the week's forecast, and a trivia question about the mountain you can see from your driveway. Know someone who should be reading this? Forward them the sign-up link →

Let's get into it.

🧠 Trivia: Look northeast on a clear day and you'll see Shafer Butte, the peak above Bogus Basin. According to Wikipedia, how tall is it: 5,572 feet, 7,572 feet or 9,572 feet?

Five picks, every one with a Meridian address. Monday through Thursday is quiet on the calendars we can verify, so the action is today and the Halloween run at the end of the week. Several listings skip the price, so check the event page before you go. Note: clocks fall back an hour at 2 a.m. next Sunday, Nov. 1.

For US businesses with big payrolls. Western Grazers in California hedged a state wage-law change on Kalshi. If a new rule would raise your costs, you can hold a position that it passes, so the payout offsets the hit. Federally regulated, from a few dollars.

The National Weather Service forecast for Meridian was refreshed Saturday at 12:56 p.m. No watches or warnings were listed for Meridian when we checked. Idaho News's Boise strip matches the 66 for today, but it shows a cooler, showery Monday than NWS does, so treat Monday as a range.

Sunday, October 25 — Meridian

66°

Low tonight: 40°. Sunrise is around 8:11 a.m., sunset around 6:48 p.m. (both calculated, not from NWS).

Widespread frost until about 9 a.m. (this morning's low is near 31), then sunny with a light southeast breeze of 5 to 8 mph. Scrape the windshield first, shed the jacket by lunch. Tonight turns mostly cloudy.

The week ahead (NWS): Monday is mostly sunny and near 65 with a 20% chance of showers after 11 a.m. and gusts to 20 mph in the afternoon (Idaho News's Boise strip says 56 with afternoon showers, so plan for the cooler end). Tuesday cools to near 57 with morning fog, Wednesday is 61, Thursday 59, Friday 56 with patchy fog, and Saturday (Halloween) is near 54 with a slight chance of rain and snow showers, so bring a jacket for the trick-or-treaters. Clocks fall back at 2 a.m. next Sunday, Nov. 1. NWS Boise →

Idaho's first flu death of the season

Pharmacy counter with a flu shots sign on an autumn morning

Idaho Health and Welfare has reported the state's first flu death of the 2026-2027 season, a man over 65 in Owyhee County. It is not a Meridian case, but the trend line is worth a look: flu-related emergency department and urgent care visits were higher over the last two weeks than the same stretch last year. Idaho averages about 60 flu deaths a year over the past five seasons, mostly among people over 50. The state's advice is the boring kind that works: get the annual flu shot, and ask your doctor or pharmacist when. Read more →

Shafer Butte rises to 7,572 feet (2,308 meters), according to Wikipedia's Meridian page, which notes that it is visible to the northeast. Wikipedia also lists Meridian's own elevation at 2,599 feet, so that peak is a serious climb above your driveway. Read more →
