Meridian Local Scoop

Happy Thursday, Meridian!

Welcome to issue one hundred five. Today is partly cloudy and around 60, which is fall's way of saying you can still skip the heavy coat, but the rain shows up in time to ruin Saturday night's candy run.

Today: a Halloween-weekend DUI crackdown, Boise's rents (up 17% for a two-bedroom), the Eagle couple behind this year's Statehouse Christmas tree, five Meridian events from a Harley-Davidson Halloween party to a candy buy-back at the dentist, the forecast, and this week's Local Business Spotlight: a downtown gastropub. Let's get into it.

The National Weather Service forecast for Meridian we normally lean on was last refreshed Oct. 19, ten days ago, so we didn't use it. We also couldn't pull a live alert feed, so check weather.gov for any watches or warnings. What we do have is Idaho News 6/KBOI's same-day forecast and live Boise strip.

Thursday, October 29 — Meridian

~60°

Partly cloudy, per the live Boise strip, with a chilly morning start (no overnight low was published in our sources, so grab the jacket). We can't tell you which direction Meridian runs versus Boise today because there's no fresh NWS number to compare, so plan for a few degrees either way. Sunrise is around 8:16 a.m. and sunset around 6:42 p.m. (both calculated, not from NWS).

The week ahead (KBOI, published Wednesday morning): Friday is mostly cloudy and near 60 as clouds increase. Saturday (Halloween) brings rain chances back, with the best shot at widespread rain Saturday evening and overnight, so the trick-or-treat window is the part to worry about. Sunday has showers continuing and snow levels dropping, with a few inches possible in the mountains above roughly 6,000 to 8,000 feet. Monday turns drier by afternoon. Clocks fall back at 2 a.m. Sunday. NWS Boise →

A DUI task force goes out for Halloween weekend

A suburban street at dusk with jack-o'-lanterns and a patrol vehicle in the distance

The Treasure Valley DUI Task Force, a group of eight law enforcement agencies, starts a three-day Halloween weekend enforcement operation Thursday evening, according to Idaho News 6/KBOI. The story is datelined Meridian but doesn't name the eight agencies, so we can't confirm whether Meridian PD is among them, and it doesn't give the hours or the end date. It marks two years of coordinated enforcement: the task force formed in October 2024 after a rise in impaired-driving crashes, and its agencies pool personnel and resources.

By the task force's numbers, its first year produced 325 DUI arrests across 10 operations, and 2026 so far has produced 326 arrests across nine operations. The group also gives presentations to businesses, schools and community groups, including demonstrations with impairment goggles. Its Halloween advice is short: "plan for a sober ride," and never ride with an impaired driver. Read more →

Boise two-bedrooms hit $1,690, up 17%

A modern apartment complex in autumn light with foothills behind

This one is Boise, not Meridian, but the Treasure Valley rental market doesn't stop at the city line. Zumper's October rent report, as covered by Idaho News 6/KBOI, puts a Boise one-bedroom at $1,450 (up 11.5% from a year ago) and a two-bedroom at $1,690 (up 17%). That makes Boise the 35th most expensive rental market in the country this month.

Nationally, the same report has one-bedrooms at $1,519 (up 0.5%) and two-bedrooms at $1,901 (up 0.7%), so Boise is still cheaper than the national average, by about $69 and $211, but climbing far faster. The article covers only Boise and has no Meridian or Ada County figures, so we can't tell you where your own landlord stands. "Boise-area renters already know this," the story notes. Read more →

An Eagle couple gives the Statehouse its Christmas tree

A tall evergreen tree loaded on a flatbed truck in morning light

Dr. Mick and Ruth Mickelson of Eagle have donated this year's official Idaho Capitol Christmas Tree, Idaho News 6/KBOI reports. It gets cut Nov. 24 starting around 9 a.m. and leaves around 11 a.m. on a truck hauled by the Idaho Transportation Department, escorted by Boise police and Idaho State Police, down State, 16th and Jefferson streets to the Statehouse.

Jefferson Street near the Capitol is expected to be closed from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day, though the times may change. The next morning, state Facility Services crews start stringing thousands of LED lights on it. The article doesn't say what kind of tree it is or how tall. Eagle isn't Meridian, but the next town over gets to say it supplied the Statehouse tree. Read more →

🧠 Trivia answer: 2013.

According to Wikipedia, The Village at Meridian opened in 2013 as a retail and restaurant development. This fall it added its first expansion shops, with a celebration planned for Oct. 9 (Idaho Press) and clothing retailer Alo among the openers, with 15 more retailers on the way (Idaho News 6). The city around it has changed a lot more than 13 years: in 1990 Meridian had fewer than 10,000 people. Read more →
