Happy Monday, Meridian!
Welcome to issue eighty-eight. Today is partly cloudy and in the upper 50s, with a stray shower possible early and a chilly night ahead, so the jacket earns its keep. Plan for the warmer end of the forecast.
Today: a south Meridian charter school gets a conditional green light for a second campus, and therapy dogs took over Storey Bark Park on Saturday. Plus a toddler craft class this morning, a farmstand crawl, a Saturday market at City Hall plaza and a storytelling comedy night. Know someone who should be reading this? Let's get into it.

🧠 Trivia: Somewhere south of Meridian, near Kuna, a brass disk on a rocky knob marks the spot where every federal land survey in Idaho begins, and Meridian is named for the north-south line that starts there. In what year was that original point set: 1867, 1890, or 1912?

Monday, October 12 — Meridian
57°
Overnight low near 37°. Sunrise is at 7:55 a.m., sunset at 7:08 p.m.
Mostly sunny to partly cloudy, with a 20% chance of showers. The NWS point forecast says 57° for today, but that file is six days old. Idaho News 6's live Boise strip says 59° and partly cloudy, with showers in the vicinity early. This time the live number runs about two degrees higher, so plan for the upper 50s. NWS gives tonight a 30% chance of showers and patchy fog.
The rest of the week (NWS, from the Oct. 6 file; treat it as directional): Tuesday is 60 with patchy morning fog. Idaho News 6 says 63 and sunny. Expect a cool, gray start and a brighter finish. Keep the jacket by the door and the umbrella in the car.

Doral Academy gets a conditional OK for a second campus

The Idaho Public Charter School Commission unanimously gave conditional approval Thursday to Doral Academy Preparatory, a planned grades 6-12 arts-integration school in south Meridian, according to the Idaho Press. At full capacity it would hold 840 students. The current Doral Academy, a K-8, enrolled 414 students last year, up 27% from 325, and would shift to K-5. Leaders plan to open next year with ninth grade and add grades once the new building is ready.
The catch is the headcount. Leaders are counting on thousands of new homes in south Meridian, and Commissioner Wally Hedrick pushed back: "I'm a little concerned that you're hanging your hat on 'We'll fill this gap, if there's going to be houses out there.'" Before opening, the school has to show balanced budgets, lease or purchase agreements, and copies of its grants, loans and contracts, or the opening could slip or the approval could be pulled. The story doesn't give a street address for the new site. Read more →

Therapy dogs take over Storey Bark Park

Saturday's PAWS for Mental Wellness put dogs at the center of a mental health event at Storey Bark Park, according to Idaho News 6. Access Behavioral Health hosted the annual gathering, which pulled in mental health organizations, animal nonprofits and community partners to show how animals support emotional well-being.
Cheryl Minto of Idaho's Team Go Therapy Dogs said the Idaho chapter has about 150 dog-and-handler teams that visit schools, hospitals and care facilities across the Treasure Valley. Guide Dogs for the Blind was there too, and its local program has Idaho Department of Corrections inmates raise puppies on weekdays before Treasure Valley volunteers take them home on weekends for socializing and training. 🧠 Trivia answer: 1867.
According to Atlas Obscura, the Idaho Initial Point was set on April 19, 1867, by U.S. Deputy Surveyor Peter W. Bell, working under Idaho's first Surveyor General, Lafayette Cartee. The first marker was a pine post in the top of a mound of stone, six feet across and six feet high, on a volcanic core that rises above the plain between the Snake and Boise Rivers near Kuna. Today a brass disk set in concrete marks it. It is one of only 37 federal survey origins in the U.S., and Meridian sits roughly due north of it, named for the Boise Meridian line that runs the length of Idaho. The last mile of access road is gravel and rough, so skip the sedan. Read more →
