West Ada digs in without a bond, the Village's lemon building explains itself, and a trophy shaped like the water tower

Fog until about 10, then sun and a high near 73 — which, after a week of drizzle, counts as a gift. Take it, because Sunday brings showers back and Labor Day looks properly wet.

Today: West Ada put shovels in the ground on a new elementary school without asking you for a dime in property tax. The mystery building at the Village finally admits what it is. The DUI task force is working all four days of the weekend. And we found out what Meridian Speedway hands its race winners.

Straight talk: nearly everything happening in Meridian this weekend has already been in this newsletter — Meat & Tater at Kleiner and the Main Street Market both run Saturday, Blood on the Clocktower is at Phoenix Fire tonight, Phil 'n The Blanks play Maddie's, and the Speedway runs its Labor Day races Monday. Sunday: a 30% chance of showers before noon and patchy fog early, then gradually sunny, high near 75. Sunday night is the wet one — showers and possible thunderstorms, 80% chance, a tenth to a quarter inch of rain.

Labor Day Monday: showers likely, thunderstorms possible after noon, high near 68. If your Monday plan is outdoors, have a backup.

Numbers are the National Weather Service point forecast for three miles east of Meridian, last updated 12:29 p.m. Friday and valid through Sept. 11. The live Boise strip has Saturday at 72 — a degree cooler than our number, which is the opposite of the usual pattern — so plan for the mid-70s and you'll be pleased either way.

Hundreds of Lake Hazel Elementary students put on plastic construction helmets Wednesday and dug into a dirt pile with tiny colorful scoops — the district handed out kid-sized ones alongside the usual gold shovels. The school is being rebuilt rather than repaired: the current building is 52 years old, figure-eight shaped, with triangular classrooms that have no windows and doors that open into each other.

Here's the part that matters to your tax bill. West Ada didn't run a bond for it. The money comes from House Bill 521, the 2024 law that split $1 billion among Idaho districts; West Ada's share was $140 million, the largest in the state because its enrollment is. The same pot already paid for Independence Elementary in Star and bought the Locust Grove warehouse the district is turning into a career-technical center. "It was almost too good to be true," fourth-grade teacher Cortney Randall told Idaho Ed News. "And then it really is official."

The new building copies Independence with one change: two full-length wings instead of one, taking capacity to about 700, because spokeswoman Michelle Edmonds says the district expects growth from Micron in southwest Boise. Independence went up on a 10-month timeline thanks to a snowless winter. Lake Hazel's schedule, Edmonds said, "depends on Mother Nature."

If you've driven past the Village expansion lately and wondered why one stark white building is covered in dozens of enormous yellow lemons, you are not alone — enough people asked BoiseDev that it went and ran the question down. It's Flower Child, a health-focused bowls-salads-and-wraps chain out of Scottsdale that the Cheesecake Factory bought in 2019, and it will be the brand's first Idaho location at 3,174 square feet.

The lemons are on purpose. The company told Edible Nashville the murals are meant to signal "freshness and healthfulness." There is, inevitably, a lemon olive oil cake on the menu.

Opening date: not exactly set. CenterCal vice president Hugh Crawford said Flower Child will open shortly after the expansion itself opens on Oct. 9.

A story about a Meridian school's mental health tribute turned out to be from May. And a search for a Meridian city council levy served up a vote that happened last November. Three would-be leads, three timestamps, three kills — which is roughly the ratio around here.

It's the water tower. Meridian Speedway's winner's trophies are topped with a replica of the yellow city water tower that stands right outside the track — and you can see the real one over the backstretch from most of the grandstand.

The Speedway has been at 335 S. Main St. since 1951, which makes it older than a lot of the streets around it. It's a quarter-mile asphalt oval so tight that the infield is just a patch of grass and pit road had to be built outside the track entirely. In 2024 the facility was added to the National Register of Historic Places. And in 2018 an 18-year-old named Hailie Deegan won there — her first NASCAR victory, and only the second ever by a woman. She did it in Meridian, under the water tower.
