The trade this week: the wildfire smoke finally thins out (that air-quality advisory was set to lift by mid-afternoon Wednesday) and summer immediately collects on the favor, shoving the high back up near 101. Look for patchy smoke before 7 a.m., then sunny, hot and mostly clear with a light west breeze. Translation: big water bottle, shady parking, and move the run to dawn. Meridian says yes to 480 more acres — and a "mini main street" out west
The Meridian City Council signed off this week on annexing 480 acres near the Nampa border into the city and green-lit Westveil, the first big chunk of a master-planned community called The Fields. The approved plans pack in roughly 900 homes — about 600 single-family houses and 300 townhomes — plus a walkable "mini main street" of shops, built out in seven phases starting around 2027. It's out by Owyhee High School between Can-Ada and McMillan, i.e. the part of the map that was farmland five minutes ago. A new vet on Eagle Road opens with a ribbon-cutting — and a check for shelter pups
Livewell Animal Hospital is open at 2644 N. Eagle Road, and it's making things official with a ribbon-cutting at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 28. Bring the dog: there's a tour, giveaways, and the clinic is handing a donation to the Idaho Humane Society on the way in. Dr. Graham Soderquist's team covers the usual cat-and-dog lineup — wellness visits, diagnostics, scans, surgeries and an in-house pharmacy. A new vet clinic that opens by giving money to shelter animals is a pretty solid first impression. Read more →
Kleiner Park goes tropical Saturday for the Idaho Island Festival
The 3rd Annual Idaho Island Festival washes into Julius M. Kleiner Memorial Park on Saturday, July 25 from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. — a full day of island food, music, dancing and vendors dropped into the middle of the high desert. It's free to wander, family-friendly, and about as close as Meridian gets to a beach vacation without leaving Records Avenue. Go hungry, and stick around into the evening once the sun quits trying to melt you. Read more →

Trivia answer: Hunter. The settlement that became Meridian started life around 1891 as "Hunter," named for John Hunter, a superintendent with the Idaho Central railroad. In 1893 a new plat went in under the name "Meridian" — a nod to the Boise Meridian, the north-south survey line the town sits smack on top of — and that name stuck.
