The headline today isn't the temperature, it's the air. The Idaho DEQ's air quality advisory covering Ada County runs until 2 p.m. today, with the AQI forecast in the Unhealthy range — meaning everyone can feel it, not just sensitive groups. Open burning is prohibited under air quality rule while it's in effect. Practical version: run the errands and the dog early, keep the windows shut through the afternoon, go easy on the outdoor workout, and check on older neighbors. Heat stays in the upper 90s on top of it. Forecasts drift, so glance at the National Weather Service before you commit to anything outside.
The $5M public safety levy gets its vote tomorrow night
Mark it: City Council meets in special session Wednesday, July 29 to decide whether Mayor Robert Simison's proposed $5 million public safety levy goes on the November ballot. The permanent override levy would raise police pay, keep up to 13 grant-funded firefighters employed, and stand up a city prosecutor's office — Meridian currently borrows Boise's for misdemeanors. The smoke finally has a deadline — 2 p.m. today
The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality's air quality advisory — issued Monday morning for Ada and nine other counties — is set to lift at 2 p.m. Tuesday. Until then the forecast AQI sits in the Unhealthy band, which is the level where the warning stops being about "sensitive groups" and starts being about everybody. Open burning is banned countywide while it's up, city outdoor programs can get scratched on short notice, and the DEQ's advice is the boring, effective kind: limit prolonged or strenuous time outdoors. A Meridian mom is cooking on oxygen — and voting closes Thursday
Krystel Spann moved to Meridian last year to be near family, and her daughter Abigail started third grade at Mary McPherson Elementary. She was diagnosed with lupus at 21; by 2023 it had gone after her lungs, and a month ago a routine oxygen test turned into a hospital stay for respiratory failure and her first oxygen tank. She kept cooking anyway — her recipe blog, Krystel's Cooking, now pays the bills the confectionery business used to — and she's ranked well in Favorite Chef, an online voting contest with a $25,000 first prize, a cook-along with Carla Hall and a two-page spread in Taste of Home.
