Happy Sunday, Meridian! 👋

Good morning — welcome to issue eighty. Meridian weather

Weather

✅ NO WEATHER ALERTS showed in the forecast text we checked Saturday evening.

Sunday, Meridian (National Weather Service):

84°F

Saturday night was forecast to cool to around 51°F

Sunny and dry. The NWS Meridian forecast has Monday near 85 (mostly sunny) and Tuesday a touch cooler at 81. One honest caveat: that NWS forecast file was last refreshed Tuesday, so we cross-checked it against Idaho News 6's live Boise-area forecast, which has Sunday at 88, Monday at 86 and partly cloudy. Boise is running hotter than the NWS Meridian numbers again, so plan for the upper 80s today. Sunrise is about 7:45 a.m. and sunset about 7:20 p.m. (approximate).

Meridian police: slow down, kids are getting hit near crosswalks

School-zone crosswalk sign on a quiet suburban street in autumn

The Meridian Police Department says it has seen a rise in young pedestrians being struck while crossing streets or near crosswalks. The good news is that none of the recent incidents has caused major injuries. The bad news is that it keeps happening, which is why police are asking drivers to slow down in school zones and residential neighborhoods and to keep their eyes up near marked and unmarked crosswalks, intersections and sidewalks.

The department's advice to parents is the stuff you've said a hundred times: use sidewalks, cross at designated crosswalks, look both ways, and put the phone away while walking. Police also flagged the season. Visibility drops in fall and winter, especially when kids wear dark clothing, so working headlights and a clear windshield matter more now than in July. The coverage doesn't say how many kids have been hit or where, so we can't tell you which streets to watch.

The rest of the week: Owyhee at 4 p.m. and Rocky Mountain at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, May 18; Renaissance at 4 p.m. and Mountain View at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, May 19; Eagle Academy, Meridian Academy, Rebound School of Opportunity and Virtual School House at 4 p.m. and Centennial at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 20; and Idaho Fine Arts Academy at 4 p.m. on Friday, May 21, at the Centennial Performing Arts Center. The district's post doesn't say which ceremonies are at which venue, so check before you book the family dinner.

🗳️ A question for the room: it's Sunday, so no news hook — just a quick one to help us decide what to chase this week.

A Meridian motorcyclist dies near Cascade

Quiet mountain highway through pine forest in autumn

A 32-year-old Meridian man died Saturday afternoon in a single-motorcycle crash on Highway 55 in Valley County, according to Idaho State Police. The crash happened around 12:23 p.m. on southbound Highway 55 near milepost 95, near Cascade. Police say the rider, on a 2026 Honda CBR650, lost control, went off the roadway and down an embankment, and came to rest in heavy brush near an empty pond. He was wearing a helmet.

The highway stayed open, and ISP says the crash remains under investigation. The man hasn't been publicly identified in the coverage we found. Our condolences to his family and friends.

The Swictory Fire burns 173 acres in southern Ada County

Smoke rising from a rangeland fire in the Idaho foothills

A regional item, since smoke is a thing here. A vegetation fire called the Swictory Fire was reported at 2:55 p.m. Saturday near West Victory Lane and South Swan Falls Road in Ada County near Melba, and the National Interagency Fire Center had it at about 173.6 acres. Idaho News 6 called it a developing story and expected updates.

The coverage doesn't mention any impact on Meridian: no evacuations, no smoke warnings, no Meridian Fire resources. With a dry stretch and temperatures in the upper 80s, it's a reasonable Sunday to keep an eye on the sky and the news.

Trivia answer: Michael Vey. He's the hero of Richard Paul Evans's Michael Vey series, which starts with Michael Vey: The Prisoner of Cell 25 (2011). Michael is a teenager with Tourette's syndrome who can "pulse" with electricity, and he and his friend Taylor go to "Meridian High." Wikipedia's Meridian entry lists the series as set partly here, but we couldn't confirm which real-world school the author had in mind. If you know, hit reply and tell us.
