The heat wave is digging in. Highs sit right around 101° today and hover near 99° both Friday and Saturday, with low humidity, brilliant sun, and overnight lows in the low 70s. UV is rated "very high," so if you're headed to Kleiner Park or out running errands, bring water, sunscreen, and a hat — and keep an eye on the kids and pets on hot pavement. That half-built skeleton across from City Hall finally has a future. Developers Ahlquist and The Pacific Companies unveiled plans for Heritage Square, a mixed-use project on the former Union 93 site at Broadway and Main — think Class A office space, destination retail, two residential towers, and pedestrian plazas built to be a real downtown gathering spot. The pair scooped up the foreclosed property at a sheriff's auction back in 2025, and construction is expected to wrap around 2029. Read more →

Meridian PD's drone program earned its keep on Monday. After a man fled the scene of a reported aggravated battery, the department's drone first responder located his vehicle and followed it to a neighborhood near S. Loder Place, where he'd gone into hiding. When repeated orders to surrender didn't work, a K9 team moved in and made the arrest around 12:45 p.m. The suspect was booked into the Ada County Jail on felony aggravated battery plus hit-and-run and resisting charges. Ever wonder why the fancy digital speed-limit signs along Eagle Road have sat frozen since last fall? Here's your answer: the Idaho Transportation Department had to secure a couple of easements to get power to the final signs. That's now done, testing is underway, and — if it all checks out — the signs will start adjusting the limit for weather and traffic within a matter of weeks. Read more →

Trivia answer: Dairy. Long before the subdivisions and shopping centers, Meridian was the epicenter of Idaho's dairy industry. The Ada County Dairymen's Cooperative Creamery opened downtown in 1929 and churned out Challenge Butter seven days a week for some 40 years. The town still celebrates those roots every June with Meridian Dairy Days — now in its 97th year.
