It's the first day of school, and the sky is going to look like the last three weeks looked — smoke before 7 a.m., then mostly sunny and 92. The one thing that does change today: that DEQ advisory finally runs out at 1 p.m. and, for once, nobody has rewritten it to run longer.

Little Known RMD Strategy Allowed by the IRS

☀️ Today: mostly sunny and hot, high near 92, low around 60. Areas of smoke before 7 a.m., then it opens up. Northwest wind 5 to 8 mph. CBS2's Tuesday outlook put the valley in the low-to-mid 90s today, so 92 is the number and 94 wouldn't shock anybody.
😷 The air quality advisory expires at 1 p.m. today — and this time it looks like it means it. The DEQ product covers Ada, Adams, Canyon, Gem, Owyhee, Payette and Washington counties and the AQI forecast is still Unhealthy, which is the tier where it stops being a sensitive-groups-only problem. Until 1 o'clock, open burning is prohibited by air quality rule and the advice is to keep strenuous outdoor stuff short. After 1, an expired advisory is not the same thing as clean air — check before you send anybody on a run.
🌧️ Thursday is the break. The high drops to 86 and the sky goes mostly cloudy, with a 30% chance of showers after midnight Thursday night and again before noon Friday. Friday 87, Saturday 88, Sunday back to 90. Monsoon moisture is pushing up from the south, and CBS2 puts the odds as high as 40% across parts of the Treasure Valley Thursday and Friday.
💨 One caution with the rain. The first storms out of a pattern like this tend to arrive with gusty wind before they arrive with useful water, and forecasters are flagging heavy rainfall as a concern near steep terrain and fresh burn scars. Which, given the acreage in the news section below, is a larger category than it was a month ago.
🍎 For the first bell: smoky at drop-off, 92 by pickup, no heat advisory. If your kid's school makes a call on outdoor recess or PE today, this is exactly the morning it gets made on.
Fine print: the NWS data feed hasn't refreshed since Monday lunchtime, so today's numbers were cross-checked against CBS2's Tuesday forecast and the live DEQ advisory text before they went in. They agree.
The westbound Ten Mile on-ramp closes tonight

The Idaho Transportation Department is closing the westbound on-ramp at the Ten Mile Interchange (Exit 42) from 9 p.m. tonight until 5 a.m. Thursday. If you're getting on I-84 westbound at Ten Mile after nine, you can't — ITD is routing westbound drivers to the Franklin Road interchange and there's a signed detour to follow.
This is separate from the eastbound closure we told you about yesterday, which is Thursday night between Garrity and Ten Mile. Two different nights, two different directions, same summer of work around the new SH-16 interchange. If you commute west out of Meridian late, tonight is the one that touches you; if you come home from Canyon County late, Thursday is.
ITD's standard caveat applies and is worth taking seriously this week: the work is weather-dependent and may be rescheduled. With the first real storm chance in weeks arriving Thursday, don't be shocked if these dates move.

Art Spark's full lineup is out, and it has grown a beer garden

The city put out the full program for Art Spark on Monday, and it's a bigger thing than the one-line calendar entry suggested. Saturday, Aug 29, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Kleiner Park, free, and this year it has a new name and a noticeably expanded lineup — more than 50 participating artists, arts organizations and performance groups.
The music schedule runs eight hours without a gap: Marimba Boise opens at 11, then Dance Arts Academy, the Boise Traditional Chinese Dance Group, the Idaho Fine Arts Academy dance majors, a Shakespeare workshop for kids from the Boise Bard Players, the Capital City Sound women's chorus, Sunsmith at 3:30 and Afrosonics at 5:30. There's a chalk art contest with cash prizes — that one needs pre-registration — plus free activity stations, community murals you can paint on, and a silent disco.
The food court has grown too: Idaho Crepe Company, Spitfire Tacos, Shire Grill burgers, World's Best Corndogs and The Waffle Boutique. And the genuinely new bit for a city arts festival — a beer garden from a Meridian brewery, set up so you can walk the park with a drink rather than being fenced into a corner of it.

The fire behind your sky is now bigger than Los Angeles

We've been writing "smoke advisory" in this newsletter almost every day for three weeks without saying much about where the smoke is coming from. Here's where. The Big Grass Fire, burning along the Idaho–Oregon border southwest of here, has now covered more than 555,000 acres and is 35% contained. It started from a single lightning strike on July 23.
For scale: the city of Los Angeles is about 320,000 acres. This fire is comfortably larger than that, and it is burning in Owyhee County, which is our county's neighbour to the south and west and directly upwind of Meridian on the flow that's been parking haze over the valley.
The human numbers underneath the acreage: 159 homes evacuated, another 315 residences threatened and about 420 other structures in the path. Level 3 "GO" orders cover a long list of Owyhee backcountry — Dickshooter, Riddle Ranch, Triangle, Pleasant Valley, Juniper Mountain Road — with a Level 2 "SET" zone extending five miles beyond that and taking in Silver City. More than 1,280 personnel are working it.
Nothing about that threatens Meridian directly. But it's the answer to why the advisory keeps getting extended, and it's a useful thing to hold onto when Thursday's storms show up — the same moisture that finally clears the air also brings lightning to a landscape that has already proved what it does with lightning.

Meridian's only craft brewery is pouring the beer garden at Art Spark on Aug 29 — the first time the city's big arts festival has had one. Loose Screw runs two locations, the original at 1511 W. McMillan Rd. and the downtown taproom at 105 E. Carlton Ave., and it turns up in this newsletter more than any other single business in town: it hosts the Chamber's Hot Seat networking lunch, it's where the book launches happen, and BoiseDev named it to this year's Peak 43 list of Idaho's fastest-growing companies. The rankings for that stay sealed until the gala on Oct 8.
The part that actually matters for a park festival: the beer garden is set up so you can carry a drink around Kleiner rather than being penned into a fenced square, which is a small licensing decision that changes how the whole day feels.
