The heat wave isn't done with us. Look for a sunny, hot Sunday with highs flirting with triple digits, hazy skies from regional wildfire smoke, and near-100 readings holding into Monday before any real relief. Classic Idaho July: hydrate early, hit the Kleiner or Settlers splash pads, and save the yard work for after sundown. Full forecast at the National Weather Service.
Meridian PD is drawing a hard line on e-bikes and e-motorcycles
With e-bikes and e-motorcycles multiplying on Meridian streets, parks and pathways, the police department is rolling out a citywide push built on education first, enforcement where needed. The key distinction: a legal e-bike has factory-installed pedals, a motor under 750 watts and a top speed under 30 mph — those are welcome on roads, pathways and in parks. Anything beefier with no pedals is treated as a motor vehicle, meaning it needs a license, title, registration and insurance, and it's not allowed on sidewalks, pathways or in parks. Chief Tracy Basterrechea says most problems come down to behavior, not the machine, and the department is leaning on parents to help younger riders learn the rules; officers can respond with anything from a warning to a citation. Heads up: a fake "permit invoice" scam is hitting Meridian
The City of Meridian and Attorney General Raúl Labrador are warning residents about a scam aimed at anyone with a planning, zoning or building permit. Scammers pull public permit records, then send official-looking emails and invoices — complete with real city logos, employee names and project details — demanding urgent payment or the project supposedly "stalls." The tell: the city says it will never ask you to pay permit fees by wire transfer, gift card or cryptocurrency. Before you pay a dime, confirm the email actually comes from an @meridiancity.org address, don't click links inside the message, and call the city (or start at meridiancity.org) to verify. Trivia answer: the Boise Meridian. Meridian takes its name from the Boise Meridian — the principal north–south survey line that all of Idaho's public land is measured east and west from. That line runs right through the area, and settlers adopted the name for their community back in the 1890s. Not bad for a town named after an imaginary line you'll never see.
