Weather

⛅ Friday, July 17 — Meridian

~97°F

Overnight low ~70°F · Mostly sunny · heat starting to ease

The worst of the heat wave broke with Thursday's Red Flag warning and those gusty thunderstorms. Friday still runs hot — highs in the upper 90s — but the trend is finally down: expect the upper 80s Saturday and Sunday and much calmer air, a big relief after a week of triple digits. Still smart to hydrate and hit the splash pads if you're out midday. Full forecast at the National Weather Service.

The Boise Co-op wants a second store on Meridian's north end

A modern local co-op grocery storefront on a sunny day

The Boise Co-op just took a real step toward a second Meridian location. The local grocery brand has submitted an official application to the city for a roughly 27,500-square-foot store on Waverton Dr., near Chinden Blvd. and Black Cat Rd. in north Meridian. It would be the Co-op's fifth Treasure Valley shop and its second in town, joining the existing market at The Village. Site plans so far show one store and a parking lot on about half of the five-acre property, leaving room to grow. Read more →

Four juveniles arrested after a 3:30 a.m. vehicle-burglary chase

A police patrol vehicle with lights on at night in a suburban neighborhood

Meridian PD had a busy early Tuesday. Around 3:30 a.m., officers were called to the 2600 block of N. Records Ave. for a vehicle burglary in progress; when they arrived, several people scattered on foot while others took off in a stolen car. A short pursuit ended after officers used a PIT maneuver, and the suspects bailed and ran. Four juveniles were arrested on vehicle-burglary and stolen-vehicle charges, and a search of the car turned up suspected stolen property, burglary tools, and a handgun. At least one more suspect is still at large. Read more →

A Red Flag day: heat, lightning, and 45–60 mph gusts

A distant summer thunderstorm over dry foothills during a heat wave

Thursday was a Weather Alert Day across the valley. The National Weather Service in Boise stacked a Heat Advisory on top of a Red Flag warning, with afternoon highs in the low 100s and scattered thunderstorms carrying abundant lightning and erratic 45–60 mph wind gusts — a recipe for new fire starts on bone-dry ground. The good news for Meridian: that system helped knock the heat back, and the weekend looks noticeably calmer and cooler. Read more →

Trivia answer: The Boise Meridian. When the townsite was platted back in the 1890s, it sat right on the Boise Meridian — the principal north-south survey line that surveyors use as the reference point for laying out most of Idaho. The name stuck, which means you're reading a newsletter named after a line on a map.
