The smoke advisory is done · summer heat is not

The good news first: the Idaho DEQ air quality advisory that hung over Ada County and nine other counties expired at 2 p.m. Tuesday, so the foothills should be back where you left them and the open-burning ban tied to that advisory is lifted. The rest is the usual late-July business — this is the stretch of summer where the Treasure Valley routinely runs in the 90s and shade counts as a legitimate strategy. Water early, park in the shade, and check the National Weather Service point forecast for Meridian before you commit to an afternoon outside — smoke and heat both move faster than a newsletter does.

First it was a Target. Then it was Buc-ee's. Now a preliminary site plan obtained by BoiseDev shows a 150,000-square-foot retail building with loading docks, five smaller retail pads and a large fuel station drawn up for the Hawkins-owned lot at Meridian Rd. and I-84. Hawkins pre-development manager Ethan Mansfield confirmed there's "definitely a user kicking around," but wouldn't say who.

The tells are the size and the gas: a 150,000-square-foot box with a fuel station and a drive-up tire bay narrows the field fast, and BoiseDev notes Costco and Sam's Club fit that profile. Here's the part that matters for the neighborhood — because a development agreement already exists on the site, this wouldn't go through planning and zoning or a city council vote. BoiseDev pulled together the confirmed lineup for Ahlquist's District at Ten Mile, at Ten Mile and I-84. The anchor is the valley's largest Target — 148,000 square feet, with grocery, a CVS pharmacy counter and a Starbucks kiosk, and no, it's not a Super Target. Around it: In-N-Out, Life Time Fitness with a 103,000-square-foot club and outdoor pools, Kura Revolving Sushi, Panera, Taco Bell, Mo Bettahs, Zao Asian Grill, Handel's Ice Cream, Ashley Furniture, Chase Bank, Tide Cleaners, a Hilton-brand hotel and a Marriott Residence Inn.

Raising Cane's is listed as a maybe. Leasing chief Mark Cleverley says five or six more tenants could sign in the coming weeks, and Tommy Ahlquist says the next phase will lean walkable — more Village-like — after this first round of big boxes. Trivia answer: the Boise Meridian. It's a survey line, not a road — the principal north–south line that surveyors run every Idaho land description off of, paired with the Boise Base Line running east–west. The town grew up along it and took its name from it, and Meridian Road traces it to this day. So the next time somebody asks what Meridian is named after, the honest answer is "a line on a map that nobody can see," which is somehow very Idaho.
