Happy Monday, Meridian! 👋

Good morning — welcome to issue eighty-one. Today is mostly sunny and 85 by the National Weather Service's Meridian forecast, though Idaho News 6 has the Boise area a degree or two warmer, so plan for the upper 80s after a cloudy start. Inside: a protein-bowl chain eyeing Eagle Rd., what Idaho school districts are asking voters for this fall, a sober note about a big I-84 crash in Caldwell, a short list of things to do (salsa, sourdough, Jon Pardi), the forecast, and a trivia question about a park that wears a councilman's name. Tonight's Harvest Edition Monday Night Market at Storey Park (4–9 p.m.) had its moment in Sunday's issue, so we're spending today's events on the new stuff. Know someone who'd like this in their inbox? Share the Scoop →. Let's get into it.

🏙️ Trivia: In November 2024, Meridian opened a 7.5-acre park in the northwest part of town named for a council member who retired after 20 years of service. Is it named for Keith Bird, Tammy de Weerd, or Gene Kleiner? (Answer at the bottom.)

Meridian weather

Weather

✅ NO WEATHER ALERTS showed in the forecast text we checked Sunday evening.

Monday, Meridian (National Weather Service):

85°F

Monday night was forecast to cool to around 53°F

Mostly sunny and dry. The NWS Meridian forecast has Tuesday sunny and a bit cooler at 81. One honest caveat: that NWS forecast file was last refreshed Tuesday, Sept. 29, so we cross-checked it against Idaho News 6's live Boise-area forecast. It has a cloudy start Monday that clears by late morning, a high near 86 to 87, and Tuesday at 83. Boise is running a degree or two hotter than the NWS Meridian numbers again, so plan for the upper 80s this afternoon. Sunrise is about 7:46 a.m. and sunset about 7:22 p.m. (approximate).

A protein-bowl chain plans a spot on N. Eagle Rd.

Protein bowls on a restaurant counter

Konala Protein Bowls & Salads is coming to 3275 N. Eagle Rd., in the plaza with Kohl's and Hobby Lobby, according to BoiseDev. The health-minded quick-serve chain builds its menu around protein bowls (think chicken burrito or Greek steak) and lets you pick your own base and protein, with nutrition info on every meal. It runs seven locations across Idaho, Washington, Utah and New Jersey.

This will be Konala's second Treasure Valley spot. The first, in downtown Boise, hasn't opened yet as of BoiseDev's report, so Meridian might get a ribbon-cutting before Boise does. No opening date has been announced. One more detail from the story, about how many more the chain is planning for our corner of Idaho, is worth a click.

🗳️ Quick one: Eagle Rd. now has more lunch options than most of us have lunch breaks, so let's find out how much appetite is out there.

Idaho school districts are asking for $307 million in levies

Classroom with a ballot box on a desk

A statewide item with a local question attached. Idaho News 6 reports that school districts across the state are asking voters for more than $307 million in combined levies this election year, with 35-plus districts on the list. The money goes to teacher pay, building repairs and renovations, security upgrades and day-to-day operating costs, through two kinds of levies: plant-facility levies for renovations and repairs, and supplemental maintenance levies for people and programs.

Here is the Meridian angle: West Ada doesn't appear in the story's district-by-district breakdown. Meridian shows up only in a photo caption (a ballot box outside Meridian City Hall). The story also doesn't give a specific election date, so check with your own district before you plan around anything.

A 25-motorcycle crash on I-84 in Caldwell sends 15 to hospitals

Motorcycles parked beside an Idaho interstate at sunset

The one regional item today, since it's our freeway. Idaho State Police is investigating a Saturday crash on westbound I-84 near milepost 28 in Caldwell that involved 25 motorcycles and seven other vehicles. It happened at about 12:19 p.m. Saturday, and 15 people were taken to local hospitals by air and ground ambulance.

The coverage we found doesn't say how the crash started, doesn't describe anyone's condition, and doesn't mention any Meridian connection. ISP's investigation is ongoing. We'll leave it there until there are facts worth adding, and we hope everyone involved recovers.

Trivia answer: Keith Bird. Keith Bird Legacy Park sits at 3737 W. Lost Rapids Way, off Ten Mile Rd. between McMillan and Chinden, and opened in November 2024. The 7.5-acre park has an outdoor gym, a concrete walking path, a playground, public art, an open play area, a picnic shelter and restrooms. Brighton Corporation donated the land and part of the construction money, and the city put in $1.7 million. Bird, a Meridian resident since 1965, retired from the council after 20 years and was a driving force behind the city's youth athletic programs. (Source: Idaho Press.)
